Birthdays tend to be a time for lots of self-reflection. Thinking back through your past year and looking ahead is always exciting, albeit a little scary, too.
I recently celebrated my birthday, and I was lucky enough to do so with some of my family. My grandparents live in Florida, so taking advantage of a week off from work, I traveled there to visit them.
Helen and Eugene Day, my grandparents, are incredible people. Still looking great in their mid-eighties, my grandparents have a contagious sense of spunkiness and general positive outlook on life. They’ve worked hard to get to where they are today, and seem to appreciate the smallest things.
Strangely, even as an 84-year-old woman, my grandma has a childish way about her that has been known to throw my mother and me into hysterics. Whether it was putting the pet bird outside for fresh air (only to have it escape) or calling their Kia car the K-I-A (in all seriousness, she thinks that is how to pronounce the name of the car), her view on the day-to-day was often hilarious and light.
My time in Florida was also refreshing because it gave me lots of down time to reflect and cherish my time spent with family. I often find myself stressing about anything and everything, no matter how big or small, and it was nice to see my grandmother living life without a care in the world.
I am lucky to have all 4 of my grandparents still alive, and I appreciate all of them for many reasons. One of the many reasons I love my grandma is that she helps many realize that in the grand scheme of things, there are only a few things you really need to worry about. And those are the important things in life, such as spending time with family. With a view like that, I really look forward to celebrating many more birthdays.
